Preparing for and practising our plan
- staff meetings
- staff induction processes
- Where practical we engage with children in discussion about fire drill, earthquakes, shelter in place and lockdown and practice these
- first aid training
Emergency kit
We have an emergency Kit located in our store room – this will be used if we need to evacuate the building or shelter in place.
Reviewing the plan
We review our Emergency plan annually – we encourage our families to read and familiarise themselves with this plan and contribute any ideas towards it.
Communication in an emergency
In an emergency we would contact you via:
Storypark
Cell phones
Landline
Authorised persons to uplift your child
Note we will only release children to people already approved by the parent/caregiver for that purpose.
Therefore, it is very important that we have an up-to-date list of emergency contacts for your child. In the event of an emergency and an authorised contact is not available to collect you child we would need you to:
Email authority for an alternative person to collect your child – you will need to include their full name and they will need to provide photo ID before we can release your child them
Text authority – a number will be given to you if necessary for this. [information will be same as for emailing].
Written note – stating your name and authority and signed by you. ID required
Evacuations
Civil Defence now no longer state that schools will be the evacuation site in the event of an emergency – in the event of a major emergency the Event Centre in Morrinsville would be the place to evacuate to – otherwise we would shelter in place.
Shelter in place and lockdown
- If we need to bring everyone inside, with the exception of emergency services, we won’t be letting anyone into the centre once we have shut our doors
- Please wait for information and instruction from us and do not come to the school/service until asked to do so, even if it is the end of the day. Arriving when we are still managing an emergency could put you, your child and our staff at risk.
- We will continue to provide the very best care we can to keep your child as safe as possible.
- If needed and when it is safe to do so, we will ask you to come and collect your child
- For some shelter in place events, there won’t be any need for your child to be picked up as school/early learning will continue as normal after the event has ended
Reunification process
If we have had to evacuate the building a notice will be left on the main doors to state where we have evacuated to, what time we left, and how you contact us to arrange collection of your child.
Supporting children after an emergency event
How will we support children following an emergency event?
- We will provide your child with age-appropriate information about the event
- We will monitor all children to identify if there are any wellbeing concerns
- If you have any concerns about your child please speak with us. We have support mechanisms we can access to provide you and your child with the help you need.
